It has been brought to my attention that on the 28th April 2012 in Almaty, Larisa Boyar, an activist in “Leave people’s homes alone” and the “Socialist Movement of Kazakhstan” was illegally detained and put under arrest for 15 days. The Special Regional Administrative Court for Almaty accused Larisa of being the organiser of an “unsanctioned” rally, which took place at 12.00 on the 28th April near the Palace of the Republic, and also of taking part in the rally.
This is despite the fact that Larisa was detained in the morning before the rally as she was leaving her home on the outskirts of Almaty. The only “proof” shown to the court was a video film of a press conference held on 24th April at which Larisa Boyar called for all activists and citizens who cared about current events to defend their legal rights together with the Socialist Movement of Kazakhstan.
It has also been brought to my attention that two other social activists, Bakhytzhan Toregozhina and Kanat Ibragimov, were illegally detained and arrested for 15 days.
I think it is scandalous that the staff of the Special Reception Point for those under administrative arrest in Almaty, where the activists are being held, are currently refusing to accept food parcels (except water) which contradicts normal practice in Kazakhstan.
I wish to express my outrage at the arbitrary actions of the police and courts. I consider that the arrest of Larisa Boyar, Bakhytzhan Toregozhina and Kanat Ibragimov is just a further attempt to frighten social and political activists in Kazakhstan.
I demand an immediate investigation into this affair and for those police and court officials who took part in these illegal detentions to be brought to account.
I demand the immediate release of Larisa Boyar, Bakhytzhan Toregozhina and Kanat Ibragimov and the dropping of all charges against them.
I believe that all repression against social and political activists in Kazakhstan must be stopped.
I am informing you that I will continue to follow the situation in Kazakhstan and distribute information about any breaches of civil, social and democratic rights and will participate in any trade union and worker protests against these continuing scandals.
Yours etc. ………………….
